Under the rule of Mikhail Gorbachev, two main platforms were presented to reform the Soviet Union. These were Glasnost, freedom of speech and government openness, and Perestroika, restructuring by allowing private ownership and loosen the government reigns on economy.

Because of these platforms, outlying Soviet states began to rebel and fight for their freedom. Soon, other states began their fight for independence weakening the central government of the Soviet Union which led to its ultimate collapse.
