Thomas Paine, in Common Sense, is one of the first to suggest the colonies needed to make a break with Great Britain and no amount of compromise would create a better relationship between the colonies and Great Britain. Thomas Paine believed the King to be selfish and the English system to be broken. As the system stood, it would never benefit the colonies or allow for representation as the Patriots were demanding. Paine suggest the selfish nature of British law would continue to benefit Great Britain and the only way to escape it was through an independence movement to create a new sovereign country.
