The Battle of Stalingrad was a major combat in the Second World War between the summer of 1942 and 2 February 1943, that opposed the soldiers of the Soviet Red Army to the German, Italian, Romanian and Hungarian forces for the control of the strategic region between the Don and the Volga and the important political and economic center of Stalingrad (today Volgograd), on the eastern front.

The battle, which began with the advance of the Axis troops up to the Don and the Volga, ended, after a series of dramatic and bloody phases, with the annihilation of the 6th German Army and with the destruction of part of the other Germanic and Axis forces engaged in the strategic southern area of ​​the eastern front.
