This was a new development, and it allowed large numbers of people in the West to have access to goods from "exotic" places. These were often bought by the upper classes as a sign of wealth, status and sophistication.These claims were usually directed towards the other members of society, in particular the other members of the upper classes. People who acquired these goods for status were often competing with others in order to achieve more status and importance in their social groups.Objects in private settings were usually connected to the wealth and importance of their owners.
