The civil war affected the North's economy poorly. When the first Confederate states split from the US, the US government lost tax income from those states. That tax income was needed in order to fund things such as the army, public schools, and many other parts. In order to understand the impact of states splitting from a nation, think about what would happen if South Florida succeeded from North Florida.
