Oral tradition was an extremely important part of ancient society. This is because the modern conveniences that we now use to entertain ourselves didn't exist at time. Books also didn't exist at the time, so oral tradition and recited poetry from bards was the only medium for entrainment and the only reprieve from everyday life. To put this into prospective, imagine that all modern forms of entertainment, including books, were taken away. Entertainment would be a treat when it was possible or when a bard was passing through. Therefore, because of it's rarlty, entertainment would mean the world to you and become the backbone of your society to share what it had learned.
