The National Assembly was created due to the long-standing discontent of the representatives of the Third State with the functioning of the Estates-General. Its creation in 1789 meant the end of the Estates General assembly and the start of the French Revolution.

The Estates-General was an assembly that the French King used to summon when he needed counselling. It was constituted by representatives of the Three States of the Realm, that were the three strata in which society was divided at that time. The First State (clergy) and the Second Stage (aristocrats) were the privileged ones, while the Third State comprised the rest of the population: peasants, artisans, bourgeoisie, etc. who, in fact, where the majority.

In this case, Louis XIV summoned the assembly to ask about the terrible financial situation of the French administration. The Third State representatives did not agree with the voting system in the assembly. Each State could use one vote, but the First and Second State always voted together against the Third, and they always won even though they represented a very low fraction of the total population and they voted against the interests of the majority. This is why the Third State abandonned the Estates General and founded the National Assembly instead, that would properly represent the interests of the majority of French citizens.
