Vicksburg campaign took place during the American civil war and this campaign was initiated by the union forces in order to take the confederate stronghold over Vicksburg, Mississippi and that was laid on the bank of the Mississippi river and this capture proved to be a genius masterstroke by the Union Gen. Ulysses S. Grant. It all started post the spring of 1862 when the confederates lost Fort Henry as well as Fort Donelson in Tennessee and New Orleans and Vicksburg became the key remaining point of their defense at the Mississippi river.  

The reason that capturing of Vicksburg was so important that it would yield the northern control of the entire course of the river and that would led to enabling it to isolate those confederate states which were there at the west of the river as compared to those at the east.
