In a treasonous move, Cortés, after being welcomed by Moctezuma II, imprisoned and tortured him to take over Tenochtitlan. Even though this first conquering attempt was unsuccessful, Cortés and his men had to flee the city to avoid getting killed but Moctezuma was killed after his treasonous imprisonment.
