In the late 1950s the was introduced and enabled engineers to create complicated circuits in a much smaller package.

The answer is integrated circuits. It was envisioned in the late 1950's when engineers appreciated you could make computing components smaller by engraving transistors, resistors and capacitors into a solid block of silicon more willingly than stringing them together with wires. And as a result the modern microchip was born.
