What were the american diplomatic goals at the start of the war? what problems did they face, and what efforts were made to overcome them?

At the very beginning of the Revolutionary War, the American goal was to avoid war, since the British Army was so much more powerful. To overcome this issue they attempted to submit an Olive Branch petition, which failed.
