An essay may be organized in the following way: Introduction: The essay begins with a paragraph that includes the thesis statement. Body: The body presents evidence that supports your thesis statement. Conclusion: The essay ends with a paragraph that summarizes your position. Directions: Step 1: Prepare an Outline On the Then and Now sheets, you organized the facts you will use to your position. Now you will organize them in the way you will use them in your essay, in outline form. Use the blank outline on pages 2-5. • Introduction: Your thesis statement will be the introduction to your essay. Write your thesis statement below Roman numeral I on the outline. If you chose the Corporate Leadership theme, your thesis statement might be something like "One person couldn’t affect corruption in corporate America." • Main Topics: Your outline will contain three main topics—three reasons supporting your position. Main topics in an outline are listed next to Roman numerals. The first main topic in your outline is the first reason that supports your position. Write a topic sentence stating this reason below Roman numeral II on your outline. For example, “One person couldn’t affect corruption in corporate America because corporations had so much more money and power than individuals.” • Subtopics: Now, decide what pieces of information you will use to support your first main topic, and what order that information should be in. In an outline, these pieces of information are called subtopics, and they are listed next to capital letters (A., B., C.) You may not need all the capital letters on the outline, or you may add more if you need them. Using the information from the Then and Now sheets, add subtopics to your outline under the first main topic. You must list at least two subtopics under each main topic. One subtopic might be “In the 1880s, Rockefeller’s Standard Oil Trust owned 90 percent of the oil industry.” • Specific Facts: Now, add some specific facts about the subtopics.
