O Established denominations like the Presbyterians started and supported the revivals to bring Christianity to the backcountry. Church membership increased and brought cooperation to different Christian groups. O t was a religious Christian revival which began in the 1730s and continued throughout much of the 18th century. Established Christian denominations were often divided with some supporting and others condemning the revivals O Preachers like Jonathan Edwards and George Whitefield usually gave intense sermons filled with dramatic depictions of an angry God ready to punish sinners who failed to repent.
