Eligion in Ancient Egypt and Ancient Mesopotamia Ancient Egyptian civilization and ancient Mesopotamian civilization were located along the banks of rivers. These rivers became the main source of sustenance for both civilizations. Both civilizations believed that the forces of nature mirrored the moods and decisions of their gods and goddesses. The Mesopotamians believed that their gods and goddesses were not loving or nurturing and were instead jealous and hurtful. They drew these conclusions from the problems they faced. While the rivers were a source of life, the unpredictable floods, droughts, and other such calamities convinced the Mesopotamians of their bad luck. On the other hand, ancient Egyptians were sure that their gods and goddesses were kind, helpful, and caring.
