Slavery was very important to the economics of the Southern colonies. The South was focused on agriculture and had the perfect climate to do so, which was warm with fertile soil. The South took advantage of this and ended up creating huge farms, which were called plantations, and ended up growing cash crops, which were crops that sold for a lot of money overseas. Some of the cash crops that were grown were rice, tobacco, indigo, and later on, cotton. In order to keep these farms up and going, many Southern plantation owners turned to labor work for help. Indentured servants were people who needed to pay their debt for a number of years, as many Southern people bought their passage to America. They first started off helping on plantations, but Southern plantation owners wanted a cheaper and more permanent approach. This was when they started to use slavery.

To the Northern colonies, slavery was not as important, as they weren't as focused on agriculture. The climate in the North was often cold and rainy, with no fertile soil to grow crops. This caused the North to focus on more industrialized businesses, like shipbuilding and woodcutting. The North did not need as much labor to make money, so they were not as impacted by slavery like they were in the South.

England was not fond of slavery and had already abolished slavery way before the Civil War started. One of the tactics Abraham Lincoln used during the Civil War was issuing the Emancipation Proclamation, which freed all slaves in the rebel states. He properly made the war "all about slavery" and wanted to make Great Britain not send goods to the South anymore by showing England that the South was continuing to support slavery. This shows how England was not a huge fan of slavery and outlawed slavery much earlier than the United States did.

As more generations and generations of slaves continued in America, they started to form their own culture. While most of the time slave owners would try to strip slaves of their culture and even punish them if they saw any ounce of it, it did not stop most slaves from continuing. Many slaves would create songs, tunes, and even poems, some originating back to where they came from. A lot of these songs are associated with the Underground Railroad, as slaves wanted to spread the message and hope that a way to freedom existed. Many of these songs are still popular today.
