Do you think that it is a good idea for the different branches of government to be able to have a way to override the other branches? Why or why not?

I believe that it is important for the three branches of government to have a way to override what the other branch does. There are many issues where it is difficult to divide power between three different branches of the government. Giving the different branches power over each other will help make sure that no one branch has too much control over the others. This separation of power will also allow democracy to work the way it was intended to, by creating checks and balances.

I think the most compelling argument for a system of three branches derives from a fear that one branch might usurp the power to rule. That's why we have a republic and not a monarchy, because if the king was very powerful, he could claim all authority. In other words, people were afraid that if they allowed one single group or person to be given every possible power then this would allow them arbitrary tyranny over everyone else. This is where I find theory behind checks and balances come from--to balance against any potential tyrannical tendencies among those with the power to make lawmaking decisions."

And it’s worth noting another factor -- power struggles between different institutions which want to grab up as much of the pie as possible
