Yes, there is such thing as a separation of the church and state, which states that individual values should be above that of institutional values, and that instutional values cannot be forced onto individuals for the sake of indoctrination. However, that is not to say that Church does not have a place at all within the political realm, as the political realm in it of itself includes groups that have a collection of identical beliefs, in which they choose representatives to push those beliefs. In the case of choosing individuals who may have the same beliefs and push for laws that may align themselves with policies regarding faith, then yes, Church's should be allowed to support the person. Essentially, one cannot limit the church's sphere of influence simply because it is a church (as that would be favoring one group over another, and would be a case, however far from the definition, of "profiling", but that the church itself cannot become the rule of the law. Remember, the US promises 1) The freedom to practice religion, and 2) The freedom to practice the religion of your choice. Therefore, Religion may influence political figures and ideas, but in no ways should it be allowed to directly influence politics itself.
