Purpose In this assignment, you will conduct research to identify the most important events of the American
Revolution and create a timeline of these events.
Assignment Prompt
In this lesson, you learned about North Carolina’s role in the American Revolution. You will now
demonstrate your understanding by using research to create a timeline showing the important events
surrounding the American Revolution. Include events that caused the war, occurred during the course of
the war, or occurred at the end of the war, and explain the effects. Describe the significance of each
event and include images to support your design.
Assignment Instructions
Step 1: Gather materials and necessary information.
a) Ask your teacher whether you will be using presentation, drawing, word-processing, or
artistic software to develop the timeline. Your teacher may also allow you to use a large
piece of paper or poster board.
b) Keep your lesson and assignment open in case you need to review what you have learned.
c) Take good notes as you conduct your research. Be sure to keep track of dates.
Step 2: Read each set of instructions before starting.
a) Gather information to create your timeline.
b) Follow the instructions for creating your timeline.
Step 3: Consider the required elements of the timeline.
a) Include at least 10 entries on your timeline.
b) Include at least two entries that represent your state’s contributions to the American
Revolution.
c) Include a brief description of each event on your timeline, including the date it occurred.
Select and identify people and facts related to the event.
d) Explain the significance of the event.
e) Choose the correct time frame for your timeline. All dates should be in chronological order
using Common Era (CE) measurement.
f) Make sure your timeline is easy to read. Construct your timeline on a computer, on a tablet,
or by hand using a ruler or straightedge, paper, and colored pencils or markers. Ask your
teacher for guidance about which form your timeline should take.
g) Review your work, correct mistakes, and make improvements before you submit your final
draft. Step 4: Consider these steps for creating a successful timeline.
a) Plan: Sketch your timeline on a piece of paper before you begin.
b) Draft: Create a rough draft of your timeline.
c) Revise: Review your work, correct mistakes, and make improvements.
Step 5: Evaluate your timeline using this checklist. When you can answer “yes” to all of these
questions, you are ready to submit your timeline.

b) When you have completed your timeline, return to the Virtual Classroom and use the “Add
file” option to locate and submit your assignment. Ask your teacher for assistance if
necessary.
c) Ask your teacher for further instructions about whether you will present your timeline to an
