Between AD 300 and AD 400, the Roman Empire’s territories included the present-day countries of Italy, Britain, Spain, and France. The empire also included parts of Europe surrounding the Mediterranean Sea and large parts of Turkey and the Middle East (modern-day Syria, Israel, and Palestine). In North Africa, the Romans ruled Egypt and parts of Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya. They also maintained extensive trading relations with many African kingdoms. The African civilization of K ush had been a major power in the upper regions of the Nile River since 2500 BC. By AD 400, the Kush ite city of Mer oë had become an important trading station for Egypt and the Mediterranean regions. The kingdom of Axum was a civilization located in present day Ethiopia and Eritrea. It had developed into a major trading power between AD 100 and AD 700. Located on the Red Sea, Axum’s capital, Ad ulis, was a meeting point between the civilizations of Asia and the Roman Empire.
