Why should illegal immigrants become citizens?

Those who have green card status have entered the country legally. They must wait 5 years before you can even apply to become a US citizen and 3 if you are married to one.

Why should someone who entered illegally be entitled to citizenship quicker than someone who has entered legally? There should but immediate citizenship is not the way.
