On February 19, 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signs Executive Order 9066, initiating a controversial World War II policy with lasting consequences for Japanese Americans. The document ordered the forced removal of resident "enemy aliens" from parts of the West vaguely identified as military areas. The attack on Pearl Harbor also launched a rash of fear about national security, especially on the West Coast. In February 1942, just two months later, President Roosevelt, as commander-in-chief, issued Executive Order 9066 that resulted in the internment of Japanese Americans. Executive Order 9066 authorized the military to exclude “any or all persons” from areas of the United States designated as “military areas.” Although the order did not identify any particular group, it was designed to remove—and eventually used to incarcerate—Japanese aliens and American citizens of Japanese descent.
