In ancient greek, the word maxi  was inscribed in the pronaos (forecourt) of the Temple of Apollo at Delphi , which has the meaning of "know thyself"
The implication of this word is heavily related to Greek Religion. It conveys that before you make an attempt to know your Gods, you need to fully understand all the things about yourself first.
