When they decided to take action by riding interstate buses with mixed races, they let the white mobs attack them instead of defending themselves. They also led sit-in in local restaurants where there were segregated seating and counters. A main tactic of the freedom riders was to have groups of interracial individuals cooperating to break the rules of the segregation laws.
