European colonialism around the world started with the arrival of Spaniards and Portuguese conquerors to the Americas during the 16th-century. In this process of colonization, both in North America and South America, a large proportion of native people died as a result of killings, conflicts, and diseases, and eventually, the new settlements were occupied by European Christian believers.
