In a last-ditch effort to preserve the institution of slavery, against federal restrictions, eleven southern states seceded from the Union and created a separate Confederate nation. South Carolina and the other states had a constitutional right to secede from the Union to protect their sovereign rights, including the right to own slaves and to transport them into the western territories. Southerners had long claimed that federal tariffs and taxes discriminated against their region.
