Manifest destiny is a phrase that expresses the belief that the United States of America has the mission to expand, spreading their form of freedom and democracy. Proponents of Manifest Destiny believed that expansion was not only good, but that it was also obvious ("manifest") and inevitable ("destiny"). Originally a phrase of 19th century politics, manifest destiny became a standard historical term, often used as a synonym for the expansion of the United States of America through North America and the Pacific Ocean.

The phrase "manifest fate" was first used primarily by supporters of Jacksonian democracy in the 1840s, to promote the annexation of much of what is now the western United States of America (the Oregon Territory, the Texas annexation and Mexican release) starting with the presidency of James Knox Polk.
