Gibbons v. ogden (1824) was a landmark decision in which the  supreme court   held that the  power   to regulate interstate commerce was granted to congress by the commerce clause of the constitution. marshall avoided the issue of exclusivity of  federal powers   over commerce, claiming it was not essential to the case.
