How were gender roles being challenged in the 1960s and 1970s? greater numbers of women were college educated and expected men to raise the children at home. despite the images of women portrayed in the media, most had not left their war-era jobs and careers. women were expected to be submissive housewives, but the divorce rate was increasing. men wanted their wives to work, despite social expectations, to reduce pressure on them to earn income.
