Ellis Island is the first immigration station. It is located in New York harbor. While Angel Island was the second immigration station, located in San Fransisco Bay. Angel Island opened in 1910 to monitor a large number of Chinese immigrants coming to America.

Unlike the first immigration station – Ellis Island in New York – where immigrants from the European continent arrived, before entering the United States, the immigration station in Angel Island, located in modern San Francisco, was opened in 1910 for immigrants from Asia, especially China, Japan, and India.  

Since the majority of Americans were themselves of European origin, they were generally more sympathetic towards European immigrants who wished to escape the adverse conditions prevailing in the European continent at that time. Hence, immigrants from Europe, while being kept in Ellis Island, were not detained for very long, but their checking was done rather quickly. Also, being of European origins, like the majority in the country itself, these immigrants were treated much more fairly and were allowed to settle and assimilate in American society easily.

On the other hand, however, immigrants arriving from Asian countries, including Japan, China, India, etc. were regarded with suspicion, given the prevalent racism at that time. For this reason, non-European immigrants, who were stationed at Angel Island, were not only detained for longer periods of time, before being allowed entry into the United States, but they were also treated in a much inferior manner. Moreover, their interrogation process was much longer than that of European immigrants. Furthermore, even if they were related to people already living in the United States, the latter was obliged to come to Angel Island and confirm the correctness of the answers given by the immigrants during their interrogation.
