President Roosevelt introduced and signed the Executive order 8802 which was one of the first steps to provide equality to the African Americans in opportunities to work in the various federal defense organizations throughout the United States.

President Roosevelt promoted the concept of equality of opportunity among all ethnic groups so that they would participate and contribute to the war effort. Through this Executive Order, Roosevelt ensured that there was no racial discrimination in employment opportunities, and all people of all classes would have equality in employment opportunities. Earlier, African Americans and people of other ethnicities were not allowed to enter in the U.S. Armed Forces. Roosevelt’s decisions gave the U.S. military a heterogeneous composition, as all persons of all ethnicities would take part together in promoting U.S. interests throughout the world.
The Executive Order 8802 ended the discrepancies that were involved with regards to recruitment and employment opportunities within the U.S. armed forces. Later, these provisions were applied to recruitment by private industries as well.
