By the year 1917, Russia was under an authoritarian monarchy that led the Russian Empire. The royal family was very wealthy and since the government was focused on the issues of the WWI, which damaged the Russian economy severely, it allowed the vast and poor majority of the population, the workers, to organize themselves politically. Led by Vladimir Lenin and the Communist party, the workers organized in Soviets (assemblies) started a revolutionary movement that in October 1917 overthrown the imperial government and established the first Communist form of government, later known as the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.
