Hu Yaboang, a member of the Politburo, more in the line of the Perestroika movement by Gorbachov, had been expelled and then died in 1989. Students saw this as an outrageous consequence, and started mounting more protests, camping finally in the square demanding reforms of the political system. At this moment was that the eldest members of the Politburo such as Deng Xiaoping, decided to quell the protests and declare martial law. It is worth noting that in the movement, many idelogical tendencies were present, from liberals to perestroika-liked communists.
