American life changed dramatically during the first part of the nineteenth century. the united states’ economy changed from a subsistence economy to a market economy. what does that mean and why did it happen? in answering this question be sure to:
-explain the difference between a subsistence economy and a market economy.
-explain the reasons why the shift to a market economy occurred.
-in looking at the manufacturing, transportation and/or commuication instries, describe and evaluate which specific change or innovation witihin one of those industries was most important to the growth of the nation.

A subsistence economy is typically agrarian (farming) and produces just enough to survive season by season (i.e. no carry over ... no additional production. This means less labor (more wealth) for culture, usually has less environmental effect, and because of greed, society has less greed / conflict / competition. A market economy produces more goods than wants to purchase and ships them to the market. For those who work harder than their colleagues, there are explanations for achievement and rewards. For a market economy, the apparent benefits of the subsistence economy become problems. There is little transportation required for transport in the subsistence economy. The majority of subsistence cities generate much of what they internally need. The market economy depends on transport from city to city (river / sea, trail / road, airport) to increase distribution, boost delivery time and thus achieve more benefit. On the big, flat riverbeds and temperate winters, the Southern states developed. This created great farm land, and farms with comfortable distances spread out. There were shorter, rockier coasts and less tolerant winters in the northern States. There were shorter crop seasons, and the soil was not as open to the variety of agriculture. Yet they had strong mineral deposits in the northern and middle states. The Southern plantations have become autonomous cities and have been able to give their own livelihoods. To sustain their population, the northern towns were dependent on imports. The trip from Europe was closer to the northern ports, so the landing points for potential immigrants from Europe were more common. For the African settlers (yes, as indentures or as slaves), the flat agrarian landscape became the primary setting region and was closer to familiar climates than the states of New England. The northern states had European immigrants with the traditional skills of European craftsmen, so in the North (furniture, glassblowing, metallurgy) certain traditional trades flourished, while the southern states benefited from the climate —- and a range of crops brought from the African continent.
