A: You would want to settle in places that are rich in resources, for example, you wouldnt want to settle in antartica, because it isnt exactly suited for long term colonies there

B, C, and D are also possiblilites.

B: You can prove that you are more powerful, literally
C: Basically showing that you are powerful
D: More land= More space= More places for more people to stay, and if it is good land, then it = more people
