 The 1920's (Roaring Twenties) was a time when people needed to let loose after World War 1. Due to the 18th amendment alcohol was illegal, so people formed speak easies which were places to buy illegal liquor. More Americans lived in urban centers than in country towns. Jazz was becoming very popular and the capital of Jazz was Harlem. Women started cutting their hair and wearing shorter skirts. They were called flappers or the more intense ones were called vamps. buying on margin came into affect, "buy now, pay later." and the radio was the most bought item during that time. The KKK was very prominent at this time with up to 4 million members and it was the strongest in the midwest. People were also very into flight. Charles Lindberg was the first man to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean and Admiral Byrd was the first to fly over the South Pole. The presidents throughout the time were Harding, Coolidge, and Hoover, all Republicans. The fun times of the 1920's ended with the stock market crash in 1929.
