He constantly promoted tolerance between different religious sects to promote an environment of peace in the reign. It is interesting to know that Ashoka was not always like this, he commanded military campaigns that killed thousands, but experienced a major shift and embraced Buddhist principles of compassion, nonviolence, and tolerance which permeated the rest of his government and made him one of the best leaders that India had ever had.
