Why was mecca an important city in western arabia

It was a pilgrimage site and trade center for the early Arabs, then important to the Muslims because it's the birth place of the prophet and, the Ka'ba which is the Muslim Pilgrimage site, is also located in Mecca. 

Basically where people made their religious pilgrimage.
