The Fourth Amendment applied differently by the Supreme Court in the cases of Mapp v. Ohio and NJ v. TLO because searching of TLO's purse  was justified under the school's rules and regulations.

Mapp v.Ohio was the case in which the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that the evidences obtained by police from the house of Mapp was illegal. In this case, the Supreme Court of the United States stated that the Fourth Amendment was violated in Mapp's case. Her house was searched without warrant rendering all the evidences collected from her house illegal.

Whereas, in NJ v TLO's case the Supreme Court ruled that searching of TLO's purse was valid under the rules and regulations of New Jersey high school. In this case, the Supreme Court ruled that teacher's search in TLO's purse was not illegal as they had the inception to search her purse because she was seen smoking. Further, her purse's search was verified after finding cigratte roles used to smoke marijuana.
