Name: Writing Poems about History

Assignment: Show me what you have learned about the Challenges to Slavery and Succession by writing a poem about slavery. You will use the Diamante template below to help you. You can use your notes to help you.

Task 1: Pick two topics from the list below to write about. Pick something you feel confident you know a lot about.

• Harper’s Ferry Raid

• John Brown

• Dred Scott

• The Douglas-Lincoln Debates

• The South Seceding

• Attack on Fort Sumter

Task 2: Examine the structure of a Diamente Poem by reading the information below.

A diamante poem (also known as a diamond poem) is a seven-line poem that forms the shape of a diamond. Instead of sentences, diamante poems are made with individual nouns, adjectives and verbs, and can either describe two similar topics or two opposite topics. Diamante poems do not have to rhyme.

Below is the correct layout for a diamante poem:

Noun

adjective, adjective

verb, verb, verb

noun, noun, noun, noun

verb, verb, verb

adjective, adjective

Noun

A Noun is a person, place, thing or idea. Example: Abe Lincoln

An Adjective describes or modi¬fies a noun. Example: Tall, Brave

A Verb is an action or state of being. Write an example of a verb. Examples: Leading, governing.

Here is an example of a completed Diamente Poem:

Lincoln

Brave, Tall

Leading, Governing, Fighting

Freedom, Slavery, Honor, Emancipation

Arguing, law-making, freeing

Honorable, Righteous

President

Task 3: Now it’s your turn. Pick any two topics from the above list and write two poems. Use the format above. Hint: Using -ing words helps on the verb lines.

Type your two poems below and then save your work and submit it to your teacher to be graded. HELP ME
