Yes, but not as available as it has previously been. It is also important to understand that the idea of an American dream is relative to the level of success desired by the individual. The term American dream refers to the ability of a person to achieve financial independence regardless of origin. Success to prior generations was more rooted in practicality. To some people, the American dream means to achieve massive wealth or a lifestyle far beyond independence. The former is much more possible in present times than the latter, but hard work and sacrifice are two absolutely necessary ingredients. The third necessary ingredient is an opportunity, which could formerly be supplied by a plethora of jobs paying a livable wage. These jobs have been on the decline for decades, as the expectations of individual standards of living have grown. The things modern culture deems as basic or necessary are much different than prior generations. The current average lifestyle would be considered luxurious or excessive to me as a young adult. I feel that if general attitudes were more focused on true success than the illusion of success, there would be a demand for the conditions necessary to rekindle a society with equal opportunity for all. As long as each person is willing to shoulder debt in order to appear successful, we will continue to move away from being able to reach the American dream. Overextended credit should never be confused with success.
