In 1895 Annie Smith Peck created a stir when she scaled a mountain called the Matterhorn, which is located in the Swiss and Italian Alps. It wasn't her climbing accomplishment that gained attention so much as the fact that she wore pants instead of a skirt! At the time, women could be arrested for wearing trousers in public.
