Analyze one of the primary source documents to examine the immigrant experience and explain the impact immigrants had on American Society during the mid-1800's. Document 1: Excerpt from New York City’s Annual Report for the year ending December 31, 1860 on tenement buildings:

While on the one hand the dwellings intended for the comfort of the rich, are constructed with a view to every comfort. . . there appears to be a studied absence of these improvements in that class of dwellings which seem to be built on the rule of giving the least possible accommodations for the highest possible rent. As if human beings were but commodities on storage, the calculation seems to be, how many may be packed in a given space.

Document 2: Excerpt from What I Saw in New-York by Joel H. Ross, “Advice to Country Citizens,” 1851

But suppose you come [to the city], and succeed. What then? Are you any better off? Probably not. I am more and more satisfied every day, that ten dollars are not enjoyed as well in the city, as one dollar is in the country. Hence, all things considered, I would seriously advise almost every man who is accustomed to a country life, to hold on and enjoy it. And not a few who are already here, and have been working hard for many a year, for a scanty living, have I urged to get away to a better land the first opportunity.

Document 3: Excerpt from Loom and Spindle, or Life Among the Early Mill Girls, by Harriet H. Robinson, about textile mills in the mid-1800s

The early mill- girls were of different ages. Some were not over ten years old; a few were in middle life, but the majority were between the ages of sixteen and twenty-five. The very young girls were called "doffers." They "doffed," or took off, the full bobbins from the spinning frames, and replaced them with empty ones. These mites worked about fifteen minutes every hour and the rest of the time was their own. When the overseer was kind they were allowed to read, knit, or go outside the mill-yard to play. They were paid two dollars a week. The working hours of all the girls extended from five o'clock in the morning until seven in the evening, with one half hour each, for breakfast and dinner. Even the doffers were forced to be on duty nearly fourteen hours a day. This was the greatest hardship in the lives of these children.
