It was Eurystheus who imposed upon Heracles the famous Labours, later arranged in a cycle of 12, usually as follows:

(1) the slaying of the Nemean lion, whose skin he thereafter wore;

(2) the slaying of the nine-headed Hydra of Lerna;

(3) the capture of the elusive hind (or stag) of Arcadia;

(4) the capture of the wild boar of Mount Erymanthus;

(5) the cleansing, in a single day, of the cattle stables of King Augeas of Elis;

(6) the shooting of the monstrous man-eating birds of the Stymphalian marshes;

(7) the capture of the mad bull that terrorized the island of Crete;

(8) the capture of the man-eating mares of King Diomedes of the Bistones;

(9) the taking of the girdle of Hippolyte, queen of the Amazons;

(10) the seizing of the cattle of the three-bodied giant Geryon, who ruled the island Erytheia (meaning red) in the far west;

(11) the bringing back of the golden apples kept at the world’s end by the Hesperides; and

(12) the fetching up from the underworld of the triple-headed dog Cerberus, guardian of its gates.

Explanation:

•Ordinary World- Hercules before he was cursed by Hera, living at home with his family.

•Call to Adventure- He was cursed by Hera and went mad and killed his family. To atone for this, he visits the Oracle Delphi who sends him to his cousin, King Eurystheus of Tiryns. The king gives him 10 impossible tasks to complete.

•Crossing the Threshold- Hercules begins his tasks given to him by his cousin, he can’t turn back now.

•Tests, Allies, Enemies- Hercules defeats many enemies including the Nemean Lion, Lernaean Hydra, Erymanthian Boar, etc. He also received help from his nephew Iolaus, Athena, and Hermes. His many “Enemy” was Hera.

•Approach of the Inmost Cave- After Hercules completes his 10 tasks, his is given two more. His cousin said that two did not count, so he must complete the given tasks. These were getting the apples from Hesperides Nymphs and Bringing Cerberus back with him.

•Reward/the Road Back/Return with the Elxir - After he completes all 12 tasks, and the King declared his service complete. He finally atoned for his sins and earned his place in the divine pantheon.

•Refusal to Call- He never refused the tasks or his atonement for his sins.

•Meeting with the Mentor- He didn’t really have a mentor, he did receive help, but they weren’t really mentors.

•Ordeal- He didn’t really have a “Title Fight”, overcome fears, face his death, or have to get over the death of a someone he loves.

•Resurrection- He didn’t have a final show down between life and death. But it could be argued that this was in the video, but I don’t really see it.

from thales, who is often considered the first western philosopher, to the stoics and skeptics, ancient greek philosophy opened the doors to a particular way of thinking that provided the roots for the western intellectual tradition. here, there is often an explicit preference for the life of reason and rational thought. we find proto-scientific explanations of the natural world in the milesian thinkers, and we hear democritus posit atoms—indivisible and invisible units—as the basic stuff of all matter. with socrates comes a sustained inquiry into ethical matters—an orientation towards human living and the best life for human beings. with plato comes one of the most creative and flexible ways of doing philosophy, which some have since attempted to imitate by writing philosophical dialogues covering topics still of interest today in ethics, political thought, metaphysics, and epistemology. plato’s student, aristotle, was one of the most prolific of ancient authors. he wrote treatises on each of these topics, as well as on the investigation of the natural world, including the composition of animals. the hellenists—epicurus, the cynics, the stoics, and the skeptics—developed schools or movements devoted to distinct philosophical lifestyles, each with reason at its foundation.

with this preference for reason came a critique of traditional ways of living, believing, and thinking, which sometimes caused political trouble for the philosophers themselves. xenophanes directly challenged the traditional anthropomorphic depiction of the gods, and socrates was put to death for allegedly inventing new gods and not believing in the gods mandated by the city of athens. after the fall of alexander the great, and because of aristotle’s ties with alexander and his court, aristotle escaped the same fate as socrates by fleeing athens. epicurus, like xenophanes, claimed that the mass of people is impious, since the people conceive of the gods as little more than superhumans, even though human characteristics cannot appropriately be ascribed to the gods. in short, not only did ancient greek philosophy pave the way for the western intellectual tradition, including modern science, but it also shook cultural foundations in its own time.
