The rebels were led by a young general named Emilio Aguinaldo. While in exile in Hong Kong, he had met with U.S. military officers who assured him of American support.

Aguinaldo considered the United States an ally, and referred to it as "the Great American nation, the cradle of liberty, and therefore a friend to our people."

But he was deceived and betrayed.

On June 12, 1898, Aguinaldo proclaimed Philippine independence, and established a republic, the first in Asia, for which he served as the first president.

Last year, the centennial of the republic was commemorated in the Philippines with extravagant parades, forums and exhibits. To the dismay of many historians, the celebration failed to focus on what happened afterward.

For Philippine independence was short-lived.
