The origin of the word “tattoo” comes from the
Polynesian word tatau, which means "to write.”
Ancient mummies have been found to have tattoos,
showing us that tattoos have been around for thousands
of years. Tattooing first became popular in the United States
during the Civil War. Soldiers and sailors from the north
and south began wearing tattoos. Tattoos were popular with
people who served in the military, and this trend continues
even today. Later, when the electric tattoo needle was invented, tattoos became less expensive and more common among people in lower socioeconomic groups. They began to become associated with criminals and people rebelling from society. Now they have become very mainstream, and it is very common for people to have tattoos. About 36% of Americans aged 18-25 have at least one tattoo.
