Read the following passage about Constantine’s efforts to spread Christianity in Byzantium. Constantine the Great became the sole emperor of the Roman Empire after his victory against Maxentius. He wanted to create a new state. He believed Christianity would help unite people and earn their trust. He decided to openly support the Christians, who had been persecuted for the past 300 years. However, he had his own ambitions behind helping the Christians. He favored the Christians mainly to help keep control of the state.
