The Hebrew Bible The Hebrew Bible features three main parts: the Torah, the Prophets, and the Writings. Within these three parts, there are a total of 24 books. The books werecollected over many centuries. They provided laws and rules for the ancient Jews to follow. The Hebrew Bible also offers us a look at the culture of the ancient Israelites. Today, we can learn about Jewish history, literature, proverbs, art, and poetry by studying the Hebrew Bible.

In this activity, you will read, evaluate, and compare and contrast passages fromeach of the three sections of the Hebrew Bible.

Directions Read the following passages from the Hebrew Bible.
Reading 1: From the Torah
God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day.
Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array.
By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.

Reading 2: From the Prophets

When the time drew near for David to die, he gave a charge to Solomon his
son.
“I am about to go the way of all the earth,” he said. “So be strong, act like a man, and observe what the LORD your God requires: Walk in obedience to him, and keep his decrees and commands, his laws and regulations, as written in the Law of Moses. Do this so that you may prosper in all you do and wherever you go.”
