The Emancipation Proclamation was mainly written to keep Britain from assisting the Confederacy. Britain was going help the south for the southern cotton, but once the British people were told through the proclamation that the south had slaves, the British backed down. It helped the North win as it cut off foreign aid to south. The proclamation also set slaves free in the Confederacy territories and allowed African Americans into the union army. Since the Confederacy had very little factories and no aid from countries with factories, it helped ensure a win for the union.
