President Washington named General Anthony Wayne to head a military expedition into the Northwest Territory. In August some two thousand Shawnee, Ottawa, Chippewa, and Potawatomi warriors, reinforced by Canadian militias, engaged Wayne’s troops in the Battle of Fallen Timbers, south of Detroit.
