Sojourner Truth was born enslaved in New York, but she gained her freedom when the state outlawed slavery. Her name at birth was Isabella Baumfree. She adopted the name Sojourner Truth and began to give lectures. At first, she urged her listeners to show their love for God by loving other people. Then she wisely changed her focus and began to speak about the need to end slavery. In 1864, she visited President Abraham Lincoln and talked to him about abolition. Sojourner Truth was a selfless woman who worked to find homes for escaped slaves. She also helped them find jobs.
